Regional meeting at Newcastle under Lyme College

March 16, 2011

Our regional meeting at Newcastle under Lyme (24th February) was an opportunity to see a really impressive new build college – “a fantastic venue” as one delegate said.

Over 30 colleagues attended for a mixed programme on social media, HE marketing, PR and a “warts and all” account of the challenges of new build launch and rebranding from NULC Head of Marketing & Communications Rachel Till. Other speakers were Steve Evans, from Netnatives, who surveyed the range of social media platforms we should be focussing on and showed how colleges are using some of them to reach NEETs and other target markets. And two of our 2010 FE First Award winners outlined their winning entries: James McCracken of Stockport College discussed their HE prospectus and Rowena Knight the PR challenges involved in college sponsorship of an Academy.

The feedback to the speakers was all good though we didn’t have as much time to discuss other topics of interest as some delegates would have liked. Issues for future discussions at meetings included building openings/royal visits, apprenticeships, Apps, printed vs non-print media, EMAs and building alumni. We have since talked about alumni at the Grantham regional meeting (15th March) and have research on EMAs on the agenda for the Calderdale meeting on 5th April. Thanks to Newcastle under Lyme College for hosting the meeting, showing off their great new building and providing an excellent lunch.

Regional meetings are free to members of CMN as part of their member benefits.
