How accountable is your college?

November 11, 2011

A report in the TES on Friday 4 November suggests that the Department of Business Innovation & Skills (BIS) is worried about new proposals for college accountability made by the Office for National Statistics.

Without going into all the details, and putting it very simply, the ONS wants to put colleges on an equal footing with other public sector organisations, but that would cause a lot more work for BIS in reporting financial and other data. So  BIS is proposing a voluntary code for transparency and accountability – but is this enough? How do we communicate about what goes on in our colleges with the local community?

For example, are college corporation minutes available on the website? And, more importantly, are they up-to-date? What happens at your college, and can you do your bit to improve the transparency of your corporation?
